Poem by Pickett, 2001

I Left Her - Michael Pickett, 2001

I left her on the bed, doubled up
With her arms locked around her knees
I left and walked into the bathroom

Stepped into the shower, then turned
Spotted myself in the mirror.
A dirty boy framed by a dingy shower curtain and mildewed tile

Stared back, cold eyes sunken into a pale face
No Adonis, there in the mirror
Zeus
Old, weary, impetuous
Adulterous
King of the Gods,
Governor of all but himself
I closed the curtains, tired of the scenery

Turned on the faucet and hung my head beneath the shower
Daring the water to wash me clean, I
Stared through that timeless liquid tunnel into the bath below.

In the unhappy pool where my toes bathed,
Uncaring
She swirled into the drain
Only to dance at the feet of a pathetic and lonely god
To eddy for a moment before the drain swallowed her hungrily.
