This sampling of voicemail responses originally was displayed on answering machines in the gallery space. People visiting the space could press "PLAY" on the four answering machines to hear messages divided up into greetings, introduction, self description and saying goodbye.
Kathy McWilliams and Billy Cope placed fictional personal ads in a free Texas metro newspaper. This sound collage was created from recorded responses to the ads. Recording were made of voices responding to all categories: men seeking women, women seeking men, men seeking men, women seeking women and "other".
All names and numbers of participants have been removed and voice distortion added for enhanced anonymity.
